Bowing

Only the three parallel gospels make explicit mention of Jesus' baptism. In the Gospel of John, John the Baptist testifies that he had received a revelation that the one on whom the Holy Spirit descends is the one who is to come, and accordingly, he saw the Spirit descending and remaining on Jesus. Because we have read it from other Gospels, we come to know that the descend of the Spirit occurred at the time of baptism. When we consider it this way, we can say that there is a mention to baptism also in the Gospel according to John. We know that there are differences in the details in the parallel gospels. Matthew is the one who records the part where John objects when Jesus comes to receive the baptism of repentance from him. According to all four gospels, it is clear that John had clarity about who and what he was. John's self awareness was that he did not have the worthiness even to be a slave of the one who was to come.

But what exactly happens? The Lord of the universe bows down before His creation, His servant. He receives the baptism of repentance from his messenger. Thus, the moment Jesus humbles Himself is the moment when the Holy Spirit descends upon Him. Jesus becomes the “anointed one” – the Messiah. It is then that the Father’s affirmation and approval takes place: “This is my beloved Son – in whom I am well pleased.”!

Isn't it clear in the Christological faith-declaration in the Letter to the Philippians? ‘Without holding on to his power, he humbled himself up to death – therefore God exalted him.'

But, does this way of Christ in any distant manner apply to us today?

Where are we going?

Let the Pope bow before the cardinals.

Let the bishops bow before the priests.

Let the priests bow before the deacons.

Let priests, deacons and the religious bow before the laity.

Let the elderly bow before the young.

Let everyone bow before the little ones.

Without that, there will be zero anointing of the Holy Spirit; zero affirmation by God the Father, even if we keep talking and talking about the anointing and vestedness upon us!
