Epiphany

'Kathakali' is an Indian classical theatrical dance. At the very beginning there's something called 'Thiranorram'- meaning curtained introduction. A small curtain is slowly lowered and just the face of the dancer who remains behind the curtain is revealed or manifested to the spectators.

Whenever I hear the word "epiphany", this is the first imagery that comes to my mind. Epiphany is a combination of two Greek words, epi and phanein. Epi means above; phanein means to shine or to show forth. Literally, to show forth the face above. Epiphany refers to the moment when the curtain of the material world slowly moves away for a while and the face of God that was hidden behind it is getting revealed momentarily.

Believing in God means, even for most believers means, that there is a God sitting far away, sitting in the sky far above, enjoying our mischiefs, and resenting or getting angry at our misdeeds. Some think that he is sitting there as a puppeteer and using unseen strings playing with us who are puppets.

God became human; the Word became flesh; and He will be called Emmanuel - God with us - these are the statements that the New Testament has got to make.

Therefore, belief in God from now on is-

In the wind and the sea- Epiphany.

In the flower and the worm- Epiphany.

In the vile and the good - Epiphany.

In me and you - Epiphany.

Do you see?

Do you show?
