Polarity

Traditionally conservatives and liberals have been identified as people who rasist change and who promote change. Liberals care about fairness and freedom, whereas conservatives care more about loyalty, authority and sanctity. It seems that the liberals oppose any sort of social inequality. On the other hand, conservatives tolerate social inequality because they believe that the world is inherently hierarchical. Some people also would say that conservatives tend to look at the world as a dangerous place, whereas for liberals it is not that dangerous a place. The liberals seem to be interested in building the world whereas conservatives seem to be primarily interested in building their own household. In a world of social media, the practical differences are crushed to the maximum and are made hot buttons. Therefore, there seems to be more and more of ideological polarization. What happens is, both the stated positions tend to gravitate towards opposing extremes. Consequently, there is a growing intolerance in the society.

I am neither a sociologist nor a political theorist. Simply from a religious point of view, I believe that polarization and growing antagonism are not going to build us up. I am not the only one here. The house belongs to everyone. The fact is that is a wide spectrum of positions where people come from. For a viable and healthy society there needs to be people with varying or even opposing ideologies and perspectives. Outright condemnation and criticism are not signs of an organic and lively community. We all need to develop at least a certain degree of tolerance of the other, an attitude of listening, and and effort to understand the other's perspective and argument. For this, we need primarily to be patient and not quick to react. Instead of a reactionary approach, if there can be issue based and mature discussions and debates, the society may steadily learn and unlearn and re-learn.
