Jesus was fully aware that his death was near. In each of the Gospels, Jesus clearly and precisely tells his disciples about it many times.
Peter also knew that his death was very near. Peter writes about it this way: “ since I know that my death will come soon, as our Lord Jesus Christ made clear to me.” 2 Pet. 1:14
Paul also clearly knew that his death was near. He writes about it this way: “As for me, I am already being poured out as a libation, and the time has come for my departure.” 2 Tim. 4:6
These were not ordinary, dying comfortably laying on a bed. They were very violent endings. Yet how graciously they all accepted and embraced it!
If we look at all these closely, we can see the glimmer of great glory shining in the next verse.
Will condemn, mock, spit, scourge, and put to death - in these words Jesus sums up the events that would happen in the folloing days. But, he completes the idea by saying, “After three days he will rise again.”
In the next line Peter proceeds his description of glory by saying that he was not telling them cleverly concocted stories, but what he had seen and heard on that mountain was simply supernatural glory.
Paul, on the other hand, concludes his account by saying that he who judges righteously will award to me the crown of glory.
Jesus’s is prophecy.
Peter’s is hope.
Paul’s is faith.
