If there are any elements in life that can destroy oneself, that can endanger one’s own eternity – no matter how dear they are – Jesus suggests that without any consideration one should put it away. Because nothing is dearer than God.

However, if you or I become a stumbling block to one of these little ones, then our life itself should be considered wasted. His reasoning is that every "little one" is so dear to God. We see such a concern always present in Jesus. At one instance he would say, ‘Amen I say to you, among those born of women, no one has been greater than John the Baptist", and at the same breath he would immediately add "yet the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he."

“Take care that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I tell you that their angels in heaven continually behold the face of my Father.” Thus, as we can see, the concern for "the little ones" is a constant in Jesus. Just as any little good deed you do unto them will be accounted for, any little harm you cause against them will not go unpunished.
