A few weeks back I had written my take on the film, A River runs through It. Rev. MacLean had two sons: Norman and Paul. Norman followed every instruction from his dad. Whereas Paul was more of a free spirit. In the end the younger son, Paul was murdered in a pub. His dad Rev. MacLean never recovered from it. As time passed, he struggled for more to hold onto. He kept asking his elder son Norman whether he had told him everything about Paul. Finally Norman tells his father: "Maybe all I really know about Paul is that he was a fine fisherman."
"You know more than that," Rev. MacLean said, "he was beautiful."
Then Norman goes on to narrate the story: "That was the last time my father spoke about Paul. Indirectly though, Paul was always present in my father's thought.'
When I wrote about this movie I had written that it helps explain the story of a lost (prodigal but never returned) son in the best way I know about.
Or what better way to explain the feeling of God about the death of his beloved child, even though he is lost!
