Toppling

There is an Old Testament verse that many charismatic preachers quote often:

"The Lord will beat down before you the enemies that rise up against you. They will come out against you from one direction and flee before you in seven."

This verse is from the 28th chapter of the book of Deuteronomy. Deuteronomy as we know is the fifth book of the Pentateuch - the first five books of the Bible. That is, the one of those that the Jewish people call the books of the law, considered to be written by Moses. In this chapter, the 'blessings and woes' are most detailed in the Bible. The first 14 verses of this chapter consist of the blessings that come to those who keep the commandments given by God. Verses 15 to 68 are the curses/ woes that come to those who do not keep the commandments of God. All of them are curses that will make your head spin. Over against one "blessing" there are five "curses"!

Although the same form of "blessings and curses" can be found in the Old Testament later too, in the book of Psalms and Prophets, the blessings and curses are attached to having a deeper relationship with God or not having one. And that's not the only difference. In Deuteronomy, the material prosperity and material misfortune are explained as blessings and curses. In Psalms and Prophets we see a shift in awareness - to spiritual well-being rather than material or physical well-being.

Although in the later writings we see a connection between trusting in God and spiritual well-being, at Jesus' times, the religious leadership taught the direct relationship between material well-being and spiritual well-being. In short - A prosperity-gospel. This is what Jesus is toppling or inverting in the Beatitudes and Woes as presented by Luke!

Thus he completely replaced the very Image of God.
