Who knows!

In 1919, satyagrahas were held all over India under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi against the Rowlatt Act. Then the Jallianwala Bagh massacre took place. India was fuming on account of these.

Whereas in America, it was the year when the struggle for women's suffrage bore fruit. Women gained the right to vote on May 19, 1919, through the 19th Amendment to the Constitution. It can be said that this was the first milestone in their struggle to become equal human beings and to end levels of discrimination.

We have come a long way now. After gaining suffrage more than a century has passed. America is yet to find a woman capable of ruling them!

But it is commendable that the United States is providing conceptual fuel for human rights movements around the world.

In the years before that, there had been many organized movements against granting women the right to vote. Attached is a handbill from that era opposing the suffrage of women and a postcard requesting membership in a women's organization that opposed voting rights to women.

What do you think?

Shameful, right?

Who knows, fifty years from now, our grandchildren will not look down on some of our positions as 'shameful'!
